最近在恶补前一段时间欠下的VOA债，难得遇到了一篇讲体育的，当中有这么一句话：
Both men are world champions and both have World Cup podium finishes this season.
句子没什么难的，关键是不知道podium finish是什么意思。podium我知道是讲台的意思，但什么叫拥有World Cup的podium finish呢。google之后，刚看到映入眼帘的几张图，就立马明白了是什么意思。
Wiki上的话：In many sports, results in the top three of a competition are often referred to as podiums, or podium finishes.
podium在这里可以翻译为领奖台的意思，那么VOA上的这句话大致意思就是：他们都是世界冠军并且在本赛季的世界杯赛中都登上了领奖台（即进入了前三）。
08到09赛季的欧洲各大联赛都已硝烟散去。对于联赛，大家一般比较关注的是最后的冠军，但其实还有一个很重要的关注点，就是最后不幸降级的球队。
在今年的降级球队名单中，赫然出现了一些昔日老牌强队的名字，比如英超，黑喜鹊纽卡斯尔居然不幸降级，而西甲，传统强队皇家贝蒂斯的降级也是令人大感震惊！
今天，就学习“降级”的英文——relegation。动词形式是relegate，意思就是使（某只球队）降级，一般用作be relegated.
比如看今天的这则新闻：
Almeria’s promising right-back, Bruno had an agreement to sign for Real Betis for next season, but the Verdiblancos’ shock relegation from the Primera Division has scuppered the deal.

Confederation这个单词的意思也是“同盟；联盟；联邦”，跟federation很相近，不过还是有差别的，google了一下，他们之间的区别大概是这样的：
federation – a union comprising of partially self-governing states/regions united by a central government. In a federation, the self-governing status of the component states is typically constitutionally entrenched and may not be altered by a unilateral decision of the central government.
confederation – an assocaition of sovereign states/communities usually created by a treaty, but after later adopting a common constitution.
federation由一个central government联合，并且自治政府会有自己一套独立的宪法，并且不会因中央政府的单方决定而改变。美国各大州政府和美国政府的关系应该就是这样，所以美国政府是一个federal government，而confederation是为了同一个目的而结成联盟的州或国家，并且他们会遵守一套共同的宪法。
再回到联合会杯。

昨天的IT英语考试试卷，翻译题中遇到一短语，rule of thumb，这啥？拇指规则？
今天在看课件时，又遇到了rule of thumb，立即警觉起来，于是“词霸+google+wiki”了一下这个短语。
原来在中文里也有“拇指规则”这种说法，意思就是——凭感觉的方法; 单凭经验的方法。
wiki对它有详细的解释，包括它的由来。

fit，再熟悉不过的单词了，不过最常见的用法是作“合适的；适宜的”的意思，今儿学习一种我没怎么见过的用法——“健康的”。

在欧冠半决赛巴萨绝杀切尔西之后的新闻发布会，希丁克用非直接的愤怒抨击欧足联所谓的“阴谋论”。“阴谋论”根本就纯属扯淡，因为欧足联如果真的要“阴谋”搞掉切尔西，根本不用等到斯坦福桥，那些质疑巴萨晋级资格的人，你们是不是已经忘了第一回合在诺坎普裁判对巴萨的待遇，或者你们就压根没看过比赛吧？！
况且“阴谋论”这样的词希丁克这个老狡猾也没资格喊出来，看看这篇goal.com的报道吧。

今天学习的单词是——hypocrisy，意思是，伪善，虚伪，the practice of claiming to have higher standards or beliefs than is the case.
扩展单词，hypocrite – 伪君子，伪善者，hypocritical – 虚伪的，伪善的。
正好这个单词打头也是单词H，跟希丁克的名字一样。
Hiddink is a hypocritical person. In other words, Hiddink is a hypocrite.
当然，这样说有些严重了，我个人并不是那么讨厌希丁克。
